Birdwood in the northern Adelaide Hills (just under an hour's drive north-east of Adelaide city) is best known for the National Motor Museum housed in the historic mill featuring hundreds of vintage and classic vehicles. For those who prefer other pursuits, the Top of the Torrens Gallery, Rose Cottage Antiques or the Institute Book Shed offer browsing opportunities. Blumberg Bakery, The Fold coffee shop, Lovells Bakery, Tony Two Times café, all offer great refreshments. The Birdwood Motel with very spacious rooms is conveniently located next to the museum The amazing Motor museum tells the story of Australia's love affair with motoring through memorabilia including brochures and maps, tin signs, petrol bowsers, toys, models and photographs. The Bay to Birdwood car rally in September finishes here providing motoring enthusiasts a chance to see rare and valuable cars in action. Birdwood was initially named Blumberg by the German settlers who farmed the area in the late 1840s.
