There’s something about winter in the Adelaide Hills that makes slowing down almost a rite of passage. From the mist rolling through our valleys to the smell of wood smoke and that simple pleasure of wrapping your hands around a glass of red beside a roaring fire. This is the season to retreat. To retreat from the city. Retreat from the group chats. Retreat from salads, if we’re being honest…

Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard, Adelaide Hills

As the weather cools down, the Hills turns on the charm, with crackling fireplaces, hearty comfort food, dark beer, mulled wine, long lunches and indulgent dinners that stretch long into the evening. And honestly? Winter waistlines were made here!

In Lenswood, Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard delivers one of the quintessential Adelaide Hills winter experiences. Their dramatic 360-degree fireplace anchors the rustic dining room, while misty vineyard views unfold through floor-to-ceiling windows beyond. This is Pinot Noir territory, and there are few better ways to spend a cold afternoon than with a glass of cool-climate red, a slow-roasted seasonal feast and someone special across the table. Their annual candlelit 'Pinot in the Dark' experience during Winter Reds takes the romance levels dangerously high.

In Ashton, Cherry Bomb Café feels like stepping into an eclectic country home on a stormy day. Set inside a converted 1870s stone house, this gem is filled with roaring fireplaces, vintage couches, long communal tables and the smell of fresh baked goodies drifting from the Scotch oven. Curl up with locally roasted coffee, warming soups, toasties and their famous cherry pie while the rain taps against the windows. It’s the kind of place where one coffee quickly turns into lunch… and maybe dessert too.

The Crafers Hotel delivers the kind of winter pub experience that makes you want to cancel your plans and stay all day. Multiple fireplaces, hearty cuisine, craft beer, classic cocktails and one of Australia’s best pub wine lists create the perfect setting for a long, slow lunch as the wind whips through outside. With more than 3,500 bottles in the cellar and heritage interiors full of warmth and character, this local icon was practically built for winter. In fact, why even move when you can also stay in one of their boutique 4.5 star rooms upstairs?

In Lobethal, Golding Wines leans beautifully into cosy season. The roaring fireplace inside the sandstone barn cellar door creates the perfect setting for long winter lunches paired with Pinot Noir, Shiraz and hearty seasonal dishes. Their much-loved annual Porchetta & Pinot Day on the June long weekend brings together juicy porchetta, braziers, live music and winter wine in true Adelaide Hills style. Rug up, grab a red, and settle in.

In the Piccadilly Valley, Uraidla Hotel embraces winter with all the quirky charm you’d hope for from a 150-year-old Hills pub. Think roaring fires, hearty home-cooked meals, fresh brewery beers and cosy corners filled with friendly locals. Their annual Winter Soulstice celebration on the 21st June turns things up a notch with bonfires, mulled wine, dark ales and live music under the stars. It’s equal parts winter festival and giant country pub gathering, exactly as it should be.

In Bridgewater, the historic Bridgewater Inn remains one of the Hills’ great winter pubs. Beautiful open fireplaces, cosy dining nooks and warm hospitality in The Cellar Restaurant make it ideal for a cosy lunch that rolls into the afternoon. Outside, Cox Creek flows past the beer garden and pavilion, while inside it’s all hearty pub classics, local red wine and conversations that linger longer than intended.

In Verdun, Grünthal Brew proves winter was basically invented for cheese and dark beer. The roaring indoor fire, gooey cheese fondue, artisan cheese flights and wood-fired pizzas make it very difficult to leave quickly, especially once their rich, warming stout enters the equation. Add local wine and gin flights and you’ve got the perfect excuse to spend a whole day in hedonistic bliss.

Just down the road, Hahndorf Brezelhaus dishes up freshly baked pretzels, hearty German-inspired comfort food and warming drinks enjoyed beside the fire inside a charming cottage on Main Street.

A few doors away, the German Arms Hotel delivers full Bavarian winter energy. Massive schnitzels, crispy pork knuckle, bratwurst, mash, sauerkraut and giant steins of German beer, all set beside a crackling fireplace as the village buzzes outside. Oh, and how about a delicious mug of mulled cider? You're welcome.

Further along Main Street, the Hahndorf Inn also leans into old-world Bavaria, with giant pretzels, Dunkel biers and huge plates of pork knuckle and wursts. Their Apfelstrudel Making Class will also school you up on the art of traditional German desserts before tucking into the finished product with coffees and whipped cream by the fire.

For something more polished, Sidewood Estate pairs cool-climate wines with slow-cooked winter dishes beside a stunning stone fireplace in the Gallery Restaurant. Think: rich beef cheek, comforting bowls of handmade pasta, wood-fired pizzas and premium Adelaide Hills reds, all within a warm, contemporary space that feels wonderfully cosy when the weather rolls in.

Down south in Kangarilla, Anvers Wines' roaring fireplaces, sweeping vineyard views, and cosy dining room make the perfect backdrop for slow winter lunches with cool-climate Shiraz, Pinot Noir and thoughtful seasonal dishes by Executive Chef Connor Bishop. Settle in beside the flames, soak up the moody scenes outside and let the day drift at its own pace.

At LOT.100 near Nairne, the Winter Solstice Night on 21st June with Ngeringa Biodynamic Vineyards & Farm transforms this sprawling Hay Valley venue into a glowing winter wonderland of bonfires, mulled cider, fire-roasted feasts and smoky seasonal flavours. Think: porchetta, raclette, slow-cooked comfort food and red wine in hand while live fire shows flicker through the chilly night air.

And finally, winter in the Hills simply wouldn’t be complete without Winter Reds. Returning 24–26 July in 2026, the Adelaide Hills’ biggest winter wine festival transforms the region into a three-day celebration of premium cool-climate reds, fireside feasts, live music, DJs and cosy cellar door gatherings. With MasterChef favourite Matt Preston leading the charge as ambassador, Winter Reds is your official permission slip to retreat, settle by the coals and expand your waistline in great company.
